I’ve never once had a hot shower here in Curaçao! It’s just too warm and the need to feel refreshed too great.  That said, many want the option and in cooler mornings or for certain chores, reliable hot water matters. The combination of mineral-rich water, salty air and relentless heat, puts water heating systems under constant stress. Whether you have a 50-liter storage tank tucked in a closet or an instant electric unit mounted right in the shower, regular care can prevent breakdowns, improve safety and prevent a cold-water wake-up call!

Why Maintenance Matters in Our Climate

  • Hard water deposits: Mineral buildup from Curaçao’s water supply can block pipes, reduce efficiency and shorten appliance lifespan.

  • Corrosion: Salt-laden air and humidity speed up rust and deterioration of fittings and tanks.

  • Overheating risks: Thermostats and heating elements work harder here making failures more likely if they aren’t checked.

For Storage Tank Water Heaters

These are upright tanks, often installed in closets, laundry rooms or utility spaces.

    1. Check for Leaks or Rust - Look around the base and fittings for any damp spots, rust streaks or

corrosion on pipes. Even a small leak should be addressed immediately to avoid water damage and

    electrical hazards.

    2. Test the Temperature - If your model has an accessible thermostat, aim for about 50°C (120°F). This is

hot enough for comfort and hygiene but reduces scald risks and slows mineral buildup.

    3. Keep the Area Clear - Avoid storing items tight against the tank. Good airflow helps reduce corrosion,

and easy access makes future maintenance simpler.

    4. Annual Flush (Best done by a plumber) - Once a year, have the tank drained and refilled to flush out

sediment. This improves heating efficiency and extends the tank’s life.

For Instant Electric Shower Heaters

These small, wall-mounted units heat water as it passes through and are common in bathrooms.

    1. Clean the Showerhead - Unscrew it and soak it in vinegar for 30–60 minutes to dissolve mineral

deposits, then rinse thoroughly before reattaching. This keeps water flow strong and heating even.

    2. Rinse the Inlet Filter - If your model has a small mesh filter where the cold water connects, turn off the

water, unscrew the inlet, remove the filter, rinse it under running water and replace it.

    3. Check for Electrical Safety - Look for frayed wires, loose fittings or signs of corrosion around the unit. If

you see anything suspicious, switch it off at the breaker and call an electrician. Never open the casing.

    4. Monitor Temperature - If your model has an external temperature control, test it occasionally to make

sure the setting hasn’t drifted into unsafe territory.

Bonus Tip for Hosts

If your property will be vacant for more than a week, switch off your water heater at the breaker. You’ll save electricity, reduce wear on the unit and avoid coming back to stale-smelling hot water.

The Takeaway

Curaçao’s climate can be tough on any water heating system. A few minutes of simple checks and cleaning will keep yours running safely, save on energy bills and avoid that dreaded “there’s no hot water” call from guests. For anything involving internal components, electrical work or sediment flushing, call in a pro; it’s safer, faster and often cheaper in the long run.
