WORLD CUP: EXPOSURE ISN'T TOURISM. IT'S THE FIRST STEP.
For most destinations, international recognition is earned slowly. It’s built over years through advertising campaigns, airline partnerships, travel writers and word of mouth. Every additional traveller begins the same way: someone first has to find out that the destination exists!
Curaçao's participation in the FIFA World Cup compressed that process dramatically. The previous tournament reached an estimated five billion viewers worldwide, while the 2026 tournament has already generated more than 20 billion video views across FIFA's digital platforms. Few marketing campaigns, if any, can place a destination before an audience of that scale.
The impact was measurable almost immediately. As Curaçao approached qualification, the Financial Times reported that global Google searches for "Curaçao" reached an all-time record, reflecting unprecedented international curiosity about the island. Google Trends also showed record interest in searches for "Curaçao hotels," suggesting that attention had already begun to extend beyond football to travel planning.
Awareness, however, is only the beginning.
Curaçao appears to have understood that long before the opening match. According to the Sports Business Journal, the Curaçao Tourist Board entered the tournament with digital marketing campaigns already in place, organized tourism and business events in several U.S. host cities and expanded sports partnerships designed to capitalize on the increased visibility.
The World Cup was not the campaign. It was the amplifier.
That distinction is important. Major sporting events can introduce a destination to millions of potential travellers but they can’t create a successful tourism economy on their own. Awareness creates opportunity. Execution determines whether that opportunity translates into visitor arrivals, repeat business and long-term growth. For property owners, the implications are equally important.
Destination marketing may persuade someone to visit Curaçao for the first time but it can’t determine how they remember it. That responsibility rests with thousands of individual businesses and property owners across the island. The experience visitors have after arriving determines whether they return. It determines whether they recommend Curaçao to friends and whether they leave the five-star review that influences the next traveller.
As Curaçao's international visibility expands, every exceptional guest experience becomes more valuable. Each successful stay helps convert global awareness into repeat visitation, stronger reviews and sustained tourism growth.
The World Cup introduced Curaçao to tens of millions of potential visitors. Whether they become repeat visitors will be determined one exceptional stay at a time.
